There is this guy I know. He has a pretty decent business but he's certain he's personally cracking the code on getting clients through social media. Since my business focuses on lead generation marketing (and he's too cheap to hire me) he likes to brag every time he thinks he's figured out some amazing online marketing secret. Last week, he supposedly figured out how to "go viral" on LinkedIn. I congratulated him and left him bragging to some other poor soul. This is the same guy who got shut down for spamming on Facebook, so I'm sure whatever he's done will get him tossed from LinkedIn next. It makes me wonder how many of you are doing things like this guy or worse, not using LinkedIn to your advantage.Profiles: Because LinkedIn is predominately made up of professionals, it's best to have a professional profile photo and information. Having a photo of you on vacation or of your kids is not cool on this network. Even if you need to use your web cam to gather a photo use extra light in the room, wear something professional and check your background. (Trust me on this one. People are judging by your surroundings.) Status Updates: If you can remember to post once a day about something business related you'll pop up on everyone's updates often. Now, if you really want to knock 'em dead and you use Twitter, add the #in hashtag to your best Tweets and they will also appear in your LinkedIn status update. Don't worry that you don't see it in your own status when logged in. There is some type of glitch there, but others do see it. Groups: If you haven't already joined your allotted 50 groups, get cracking. It's just like any search engine. Type in some keywords about your profession, target market, location and you'll find lots of great groups to join. Stick to the larger groups and don't hesitate to leave if you don't find the posts helpful. You can join my groups by clicking Marketing Outsourcing & Freelance Professionals and Business Buddies. Be sure to comment, start discussions and share relevant events. Just don't use your connections to spam regularly. If you do, you will find people disconnecting from you or simply not paying attention to you. And if you are hunting for a certain person for business opportunities, use the Advanced Search to find exactly who you're looking for. Use your network to get introductions. This under-used feature is one of the best targeting tools on LinkedIn. Be sure to have a clear agenda and share it with your connector.
