Another month, another change by Google that sends everyone into an SEO frenzy. Last week Google made changes to their SERPs (search engine results page). Instead of the usual three Sponsored Links on top and then a list of the highest ranking Sites, images and videos are now appearing in the SERPs. What does this mean to you? You need to expand what appears on your home pages beyond SEO content.

Layman’s Terms:  In plain English, Google tossed video and image results into their algorithm for searches providing further competition for Page One search rankings. E.g. a site that appeared in the middle or bottom of Page One could find themselves on Page Two or Three because videos and images are competing for that same search. Great content isn’t cutting it anymore – not alone, anyway.

Work Your Images:  Image additions to your home page will help if they are properly tagged (keywords attached to the image) and relevant to your audience. If you have images that make sense for your target e.g. product photos of the jewelry you design or the indoor playground at your new location, post them with text captions. The SERPs don’t like images without captions. This doesn’t mean visible to the viewer. It’s part of the uploading process in your site. Most allow you to choose whether the text is visible or not.

Vidiot Reform: I admit to being a vidiot. I own a first generation Flip camera and a web cam. I just hate how amateur video makes me look (I know that’s totally vain of me!) Shy of Oprah’s lighting crew, I will always cringe watching myself on video. But, I must get over it. Having video on your home page is practically a requirement now. I’m not great at editing, but I’m forcing myself to learn through some great free tools online. YouTube has built in editors once you have your own channel. One that might be already on your desktop is Windows Movie Maker. Take time to learn one of these.

See The Future:  As I watched my son’s baseball game this weekend, two tweens were sitting behind me watching music videos on their mom’s phone. Just like computers and smart phones, video is here to stay and only going to get bigger. Plan now. Human attention spans are shortening daily!

Overall, I encourage you to pay close attention to this new Google change.  Check your analytics regularly and watch for changes. Add conversion goals within your videos. See how many visitors prefer the video path over the traditional one.  If your blog is one of your main landing pages, try a video blog once in a while. In the interim, watch as I reform and send your comments. I admit that I’m a complete rookie and I will take all the advice I can get.

Just like good writing takes practice, good videos take practice also. Beyond the discomfort of seeing how you look on film (my take on myself is always "Is this what I really look like???" - there is the additional pressure of having a conversation with a camera.

Paula and Marty, I just posted an article about fear of appearing on video - check it out at http://meldupont.com/?p=36

The major problem with video is that, as you noticed, people watch a lot of video and television, even while sitting at a baseball game/bus stop/bank line-up. People's expectations are very high because they know what high quality video looks like, and anything less will turn people off.
I saw a Google produced video get slammed online because the guy was unshaven and not wearing a tie. Personally, I think the critique was slightly harsh, but it shows how people view professionals and professional video.
The bar is high, so do all you can to get close, even if you aren't Stephen Spielberg.

Testimonials

I was going thru a marketing overhaul and Paula was an invaluable resource. I felt that I was so involved in my business that I might have lost touch with who my customers are, what matters to them, and the best features and benefits to promote in order to grab their attention.Paula helped me develop a Persona Chart, precisely targeting different segments of the market and defining their different persona, along with the benefits that would touch them the most. It is my basis for all marketing material being produced from now on.
