Blogging Sucks! Yeah, I know. Get over it and do it!

Very few people consider themselves excellent writers. In school we learned that more is better with the “10 pages, double spaced” requirements of our instructors. But now in the blogosphere, less is even more and frequent is tremendous. What’s a journalisticly challenged person to do? Blogging is not going away. It’s proven to drive traffic to your website and can even be tracked to sales conversions. Here are some simple tips to get over the writer’s block.

Your Opinion Matters: Do you read industry blogs and trade journals and find your thoughts differing from the author? Is it possible there is someone out there that agrees with you? Share your opinion. Be bold. Get angry. Your opinion and personality make your business real and approachable. If you are afraid of ticking someone off, you are not getting the public relation angle that all publicity is god publicity. Be real – be yourself.

Writer’s Block Solutions: Don’t expect to sit down in front of your computer and just crank out something brilliant. Topics will come in batches. Keep a list of interesting topics that you wish to blog about that would interest your readers. When it’s time to write if you don’t have a topic in mind, go to your list and pull one up.

It’s all in the Edit: Don’t pump out a blog without walking away from it for a little while. Re-read it and edit it. Cut out things that don’t add to the topic. Concise is always better. Blogs have taken over because of their brevity. You need only 300-500 words. If you ramble beyond that, you better have something amazing to say or most people will stop reading.

Hold Yourself Accountable: You are the only one who knows how much you will procrastinate. If you want your blog posted on Wednesdays and you know that you have Tuesday morning’s free, schedule time to blog every week on Tuesday morning. Since you know you should walk away before the final edit, add another session Tuesday afternoon. That gives you time to send it to the person uploading it.

Don’t let Comments Freak You Out: Some people have nothing better to do than be a downer. Most comments are good ones, but take the bad ones in stride. They aren’t your target audience. Who needs to waste time on kill-joys?The best voice for your company is yours. While ghost bloggers are another option it’s never easy to express the personality and passion that you have about your topic and business. Unless you really can’t write or talk to a video camera (video blog or vlogging) you should make an attempt at least once a week to connect with your target audience.

That said: If you just can’t bring yourself to blog, Pollock Marketing Group offers the services of some great blogging talent.

Paula;
You make a strong case for blogging - not only regarding it's importance in establishing your site as a thought-leader, but for "just doing it".
I find that using a formal process description to guide my Social Media Marketing (SMM) activities is the best way to both get me participating, and to drive better results. Such formal process definitions should be designed around the Continuous Process Improvements mantra of Think, Plan, Do, Measure and Repeat.

Sound stuffy and way to academic? Perhaps, but what other way is there to ensure that your SMM campaigns will get better and better over time?

Testimonials

I was going thru a marketing overhaul and Paula was an invaluable resource. I felt that I was so involved in my business that I might have lost touch with who my customers are, what matters to them, and the best features and benefits to promote in order to grab their attention.Paula helped me develop a Persona Chart, precisely targeting different segments of the market and defining their different persona, along with the benefits that would touch them the most. It is my basis for all marketing material being produced from now on.
